ENG 101
Read to Write/ final assignment
Prof. Chris Alexander

                                                      Read To Write

According to many people, the more you read, the more knowledge you get. However, I believe that not only the reading helps people to get more notion of the different situations that are going up around them, but the writing as well. To me both, reading and writing, have a powerful meaning to the human brain.  They just go together.

By writing you can express yourself in many different ways. People use pencils, pens, words, letters and paper every single day. It could be in school while writing an assignment, at work sending a letter to your boss or in any other situation. But most of the time people don’t know the meaning to it. However, for writers, is a totally different story. It’s to go beyond than a pencil with the piece of paper, or than letters and words. To them, the use of a pen and a piece of paper is to move from one place to another. To give meaning to that spirit that no one is able to see. For writers, to write is the most powerful thing under their position.  It’s to identify themselves with that little world, that little space in where only they belong. As Williams Faulkner, an American writer and Nobel Prize laureate, explained, “Story usually begins with a single idea or memory or mental picture. The writing of the story is simply a matter of working up to that moment, to explain why it happened or what it caused to follow. A writer is trying to create believable people in credible moving situations in the most moving way”. Basically, what he says is that you who know how to write need to put words in a way that people can understand the mean of it.  Explain to them the situation so they can see beauty of writing.

In addition, writing to me is to unlock many doors to your thoughts, lead them free to go wherever they want to go. However, it’s not that simple. When I first started to write down things was because my professors “forced me” to do so. In fact, I didn’t like to write at all.  But when I decided to pay attention to the meaning of writing, I could understand that writing is more than just say something to someone else. It’s to express your feelings in a different angle. To say whatever you have to say and whenever you want to say it. Because the time that you choose to write, that is the right and perfect time to do so.

On the other hand, to me, the reading part has a powerful meaning and helps people’s writing skills and knowledge as well. Why do I believe so? Because in the reading world there are so many complicated words that sometimes at first you can’t understand and to be able to understand them, you have to write them down. And this is the connection between reading and writing. One helps you to improve the other one. In other words, reading helps you to see writing differently. It forces you to be better in your writing, because it gives more knowledge about situation in life that you may didn’t even think about. As a result, this is why I called this assignment “Read to Write” because you can’t get a good understanding of the writing unless you read.

To conclude this assignment, to me writing  means to be able to express myself the way I want to without hiding any thoughts. And it means a lot to me because sometimes I’m afraid to say thing s in public but while I write I don’t have that feeling. Through writing I feel free.

                                             The Woman on the Park!
There is this woman sitting down on a seat on the Bryant Park, she is listing to music on her black iPhone. While listing to music, she is looking at the white dove that is flying right in front of her. For instance, she looks at her phone but it seems like she doesn't like the son that it's being playing. She keeps moving her right hand indicating that she is changing to another song. She keeps doing the same thing over and over again, looks up and then down to her phone.  She was on her phone for awhile but once the sun comes out she looks up and starts contemplating the beauty of the shine sun!  It is beautiful to see the reflect of the sunlight on her braided hair, it becomes kind of yellowish and it moves with the winds while the sun shines on the braid. Around five minutes later she takes her headphones off, puts her phone on her navy-blue purse, takes the purse, stuns up and leaves.
                                                      The Couple!
There was this couple, they just got here after me.  There were trying to seat but the chairs were wet because of the rain.. They took some napkins from the bag of food and started to clean up the table and the chairs. Inside of the bag of food, they had two big salads and two glass of bottle of water. Then they sat down and taking the fork with the right hand the woman started to eat the salad. While she was eating, the man took out his camera and started to take pictures of her eating the salad. Few minutes later, she finished eating, she took the camera and took some pictures of man as well while he was eating and  everything around. Then they started to look at the pictures that both of them have been taken, while looking at the pictures they laughed so hard that  I was able to hear them. After that, they putted the camera right back into the small black packet. They sat there for awhile, then few minutes later they picked up their garbage and left..

                                            The Dove
To describe doves is not simple, they never stay still. But with this big white dove was different. There was this young lady sitting down on a bench that says "sart's bench", and by the expression on her faces I can tell that she was thinking about something while at the time was looking at the environment. Few minutes later, the big white dove that I was describing starting to move and went closer to the lady,  the lady took something out from her bag and gave it to the dove.I thought the dove would take whatever the lady threw out on the floor and would leave but it was not like that. This dove stay next to the women for around like five minutes and did not move until the lady move. To me that was impressing! because usually doves fly away as soon as they feel someone around them.

ENG 101
Library Assignment

The toucan is a medium-sized bird native to the  rain forests of central and South America and the Caribbean. There are more than 40 different species of toucan that inhabit the South American jungles today. Known for it's large colorful beak that despite it's large size, is surprisingly light due to the fact that it is made of a substance called keratin (the same substance that makes up the nails and hair of many animals including humans) . The toucan's beak measures around half the toucans body length and is used for mating, feeding and defense purposes. The toucan's bill however, is not particularly strong and so it is used more to intimidate predators rather than to fight them off.
The toucan only has small wings as it dwells in forests and therefore do not need to travel large distances. The toucan's wingspan is roughly the same length as the toucans body. Although the toucan is able to fly, the toucan is not very good at flying and cannot be in the air for very long. Instead of using their wings to get around, the toucan hops between the tree branches using it curved toes and sharp claws to get a good grip on the narrow surface that it holds on to.
Toucans are omnivorous birds and feed on a mixture of plants and animals. Toucans eat fruits, berries, nuts and seeds along with eggs, insects and small mammals and reptiles. The primary source of food for the toucan is the fruit which grows on the trees where the toucan lives.
Toucans have a number of predators in the South American jungle including humans, large birds of prey and wild cats. Weasels, snakes and rats tend to prey more on the eggs of the toucan rather than the toucan itself (many small animals are generally intimidated by the toucan's large bill).
Although toucans are generally solitary when feeding, toucans often live in small groups of around 6 or 7birds. The bright colors of the toucan give the toucan camouflage in the colorful rainforest canopy. However, due to their bright colors, toucans are often captured and sold as pets with toucans being popular animals in the exotic pet trade.
Toucans build their nest in trees in lay around 3 eggs. When the toucan chicks hatch, both the male toucan and the female toucan help to feed them and protect them from predators. The toucan chicks are born with small beaks that don't reach their full size for at least a few months.

John Gould: The Family of Toucans

Big-billed technicolor marvels

John Gould’s toucans are arguably the most striking and dramatic bird illustrations ever published. Gould (1804–1881), one of the most prolific ornithological artists of the 19th century, had a romantic enthusiasm for winged creatures, as well as a passion for natural history and a impulse to catalog. Drawing on his outstanding scientific and artistic talents, he embarked on a series of projects that would eventually make him the leading publisher of ornithological illustrations in Victorian Britain. Gould’s unparalleled career spanned five decades, during which he produced a series of books depicting birds from all over the world.
Jonathan Elphick is a British natural history author, editor, consultant, researcher and lecturer, specializing in ornithology. His many books include an acclaimed historical survey of ornithological illustration, Birds: The Art of Ornithology. Based in London, he is a Scientific Fellow of the Zoological Society of London and a Fellow of the Linnea Society of London.

                                                  Lou can.

                                                  Just how few can
                                                  Ride the toucan?
                                                  Two can.

                                                 What kind of goo can
                                                 Stick you to the toucan?
                                                 Glue can.
                                                 Who can write some
                                                 More about the toucan?
                                                 You can!

The reason why I chose Toucans as my Theme:

One of the animals that caught my attention the most is the Toucan. I believe that everything about them is interesting.  The way they move, the kind of food they eat, and the most important thing is that Toucans are well known for their big and colorful bills. Toucans use their beaks to pluck and peel fruit, their main source of food. In addition, the beak houses a flat tongue of the same length, which helps the toucan catch insects, frogs, and reptiles.
Moreover, as I was reading about Toucans I found some important fact that might be helpful to get to know Toucans' lifestyle better:

  • Their bright colorful markings provide them with excellent camouflage in the rainforest.
  • Toucans live in flocks made up of approximately five to six birds.
  • They build their nest in tree hollows created by other animals; generally in the rainforest canopy.
  • Toucans are omnivorous (eat both plants and animals). Their main food source is fruit which is plentiful in the rainforest trees where they live. They also consume eggs, insects, reptiles, small animals, and nuts.
  • Their predators in the South American rainforest are generally large birds and wild cats. Other animals such as snakes and rodents may go after adult toucans but prefer to feed on their eggs.
  • They have small wings that do not allow it to fly very far. This is not a problem for the Toucan because it does not need to travel far. It hops around the rainforest trees and may fly very short distances to obtain food.
  • Toucans have sharp strong claws which enable it to hold tightly onto branches.
  • Due to their beauty toucans are often captured and sold as pets.
  • Toucans are born very small and do not reach their full size for many months. During this time both the mother and father protect it from predators.
  • Toucans are not considered an endangered species. The rapid rate of the destruction of rainforests has pushed many animals to the brink of extinction.

The Yellow Wall-Paper

"It is dull enough to confuse the eye in following, pronounced enough to constantly irritate and provoke study, and when you follow the lame uncertain curves for a little distance they suddenly commit suicide- plunge off at outrageous angles, destroy themselves in unheard of contradictions".

"It is dull enough to confuse the eye in following",can see you see what she is trying to describe to you in this paper? Can you see that it does not matter how you look at it or for how long you stared at the paper, you always would get confuse and lost yourself on it?

"Pronounced enough to constantly irritate and provoke study", this yellow wall-paper is so horrible that by just pronouncing the word makes her feel worst than the way she was... Constantly? meaning that every single time, morning or night or even any hour of the day, whenever she looks at the yellow wall-paper, it's like looking a monster; and not only makes her look at it but to study every part of it.

"And whenever you follow the lame uncertain curves for a little distance they suddenly commit suicide", don't you ever try to follow the lines of this paper, not even from a distance, because if you do so you are going to get lost and the only thing that would come to your mind is to kill yourself.

"Plunge off at outrageous angles, destroy themselves in unheard of contradictions", the paint itself is like killing every feeling inside her. Not one or another but all of them at the same time. You can tell that by the way she is expressing herself and the fact that she has too much to say about the yellow wall-paper. But she never finds a single good thing on it. She can make any comparison with the paper but a good one ,instead of, she gives the worst definition to that paper and just because she does not like the idea of it. Sometimes, she feels like even though there are many beautiful things to look at, inside and outside of the house,  as the the amazing garden  with some colorful flowers that she is able to see throughout the window, she feels stuck in the room with that ugly and horrible yellow wall-paper.

 The Yellow Wall-Paper

The part that I found the most striking in the story "The yellow wall-paper", was when the narrator described the wall-paper as a depressing and uncomfortable design. The narrator explained in many paragraphs her feelings about the yellow wall-paper, but there was one in specific that caught my attention and it was when she said "I'm getting really fond of the room in spite of the wall-paper. Perhaps because of the wall-paper". Those words seems to be a positive description to the wall-paper. However, when the reader pay close attention to them, it could be found the sarcastically definition that the narrator was making. Moreover, it was so obvious the dislike for that yellow wall-paper in the big room, that sometimes she just wanted to lose herself by writing a little. As she explained, "it would relive the press of ideas and rest me" but she was not able to even try it, she got tired easily.

On the other hand, the narrator pointed out that there were many beautiful things inside the house and outside the house to look at. For example, she described the colonial mansion as "the most beautiful place!" And then she emphasized that the garden looked wonderful with those colorful roses. But that yellow wall-paper was the only uncomfortable thing that she was able to contemplate. As a result, she described as a "horrible paper".
